Summer Vacation give-away

Like Melisa at Sweet Home Quilt Co., some of my fondest memories are with my grandmother. I got to see her during my summer vacations, when most years I spent my entire summers in California. I moved between the houses of my maternal grandparents and my great Aunt (my grandmother's twin sister) and Uncle, who lived about 20 minutes from each other. There was a great public park with a pool, a playground, and a library about a mile from my grandmother's house that we rode our bikes to quite often.

Other summer vacations I had as a child were time at Girl Scout camp and soccer camp, a short trip on the coast of Georgia several times, and lots of time spent running around with my friends.

I would love to know what your favorite summer vacations were when you were a child.

We will make it a give away opportunity. You fill out your comments on your favorite summer vacations and I will do a random drawing on December 13th, for a pair of bright batik fat quarters for the winner.

My favorite summer vacations were spent at my Granparent's cottage in northern Vermont. No TV, just the lake, the mountains, wild blueberries and moose. It was the favorite vacation of my kids and now my grandkids love it.

My favorite summer vacations were spent at our cabin on Higgins Lake in Michigan (hold up your left hand and it is on your middle knuckle). we played in the water all day and then walked to store for penny candy. Yes, candy was actually a penny! Then we finished the day making s'mores by the fire. No video games, no dvds, no ipods, no cell phones ... just pure fun with the family in the summers of the 1970s.

My mother's sister used to have a house on the Isle of Palms right outside of Charleston, SC. Every year like clockwork we would go stay at her house. It was two blocks from the beach, and the island is small enough to walk in a day. I would ride my uncle's bike, I'm short, he's extremely tall, and that was always a very funny sight. I think my favorite part was not the actual swimming in the ocean, but walking back to the house from a day of swimming, while my body still felt like it was in the midst of the waves. *grin*

well growing up we were very poor so no vacations per say. I do remember staying with my cousins for one whole summer in their new home. I stayed so long that I even started school with them. That was fun.

Like Mamie, I spent lots of summers in Northern Michigan, swimming in lakes, smelling the white pines, and sleeping under the rustling trees in tents. Nothing beats the beauty of Michigan in summertime!

This may not be the kind of memory you are looking for, but my favorite memories are from the past 10 years when we have rented a house a few doors back from the beach in Hatteras Village. All of our kids come sometimes, and one of our daughters has come every year. One of my grandsons now thinks that we live at the beach because the only house he has been to where we are "living" was the house we rent at the beach. If we have all the grandkids and kids then we rent an adjacent house so when he goes to "Nana's" he just has to go across the yard. I'd love for that to be all the time, but he is in Marietta and we live in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia - until retirement when we then plan to move back to GA.

I was down for the Shop Hop last year and hope to come again. I was on the bus that Sarah had - will you be doing that again this year?

We didn't go on many vacations because of the cost, but we did go camping every summer in Algonquin Park. I loved it. The haunting calls of the loons, the cry of a lone wolf, the canoe trips to the portage store for supplies, the nightly campfires, the wild blueberries in the old airfield (for that meant blueberry pancakes for breakfast the next morning), the deer along the side of the highway and the bears that came to raid our garbage can! It was a wonderful, simpler, carefree time!

We camped every year when I was growing up. My parents always took us on two-week vacations, so I was able to see 35 states and Eastern Canada before I was out of high school. My husband enjoyed camping too, but their idea of camping was to drive to one place and camp for a week. I have always felt sorry for our six children who didn't get to see the USA like I did.

The one particular summer vacation that comes to mind was not my favorite summer vacation at the time. It took some time for me to appreciate how fun this vacation actually was. During this particular summer, my family spent the whole summer camping. We went camping at Disney World and spent weeks camping around Atlanta at Lake Lanier and Stone Mountain. My parents worked opposite work shifts. They loved camping so much that they would actually go to work from the campground. (Someone was always with us kids!) My sister and I loved the freedom of riding our bikes around the campground. I can remember my grandmother actually visiting us at the campsite. At the time, I had had my fill of camping and it wasn't until recently, after having my own kids, that I realized just what an adventure that was!
